5Great unit !!!!!!!!!
By K. Baer
Great product...manufacturer was very helpful in the installation process..first installer said it could not be installed in a Honda van..manufacturer said that it could be done..went to a second installer and he completed it in 2 hours and at a cheaper price..If you have a professional complete the installation, the manufacturer extends the warrantee from one year to three years...the unit comes in black, but includes the necessary parts to have it be grey or tan. The dvd player sends the signal thru the an FM signal to your radio, so the sound of the dvd player goes thru all the speakers in the radio. Once your child can use headphones, then the signal will go to them, and you then can listen to your radio again!!Only problem so far is that the remote does not work very easily, but the controls on the front of the unit are very user friendly and easy to get to.Our daughter loves the dvd player and it keeps her entertained while in the van... I would recommend the Boss DVD player, as it was one third the cost of the dvd player that the car dealer installs and twice the size of the screen..a win..win..

5So far - So good.
By SORmom
I bought this item from Amazon and had it installed at Best Buy. It has all the options of every other system on the market and at a much better price. Three hours after dropping my van off at best buy, they called to say that it was fully installed, but they weren't happy with the sound quality and asked me to come take a look. The installer was concerned that you could barely hear it even when the sound was turned all the way up and that there was too much static coming from the car radio. After installing a wire to plug the sound into my AUX port of my car's radio, the static was gone, but the sound was still too quiet. The installers tried more than once to sell me a unit from the Best Buy store and return the Boss unit. Turns out the unit itself has a volume up and down, turn it up on the unit and then turn the radio back down some - it all evens out. Once we left Best Buy (getting out of their building) the static from the built in wireless FM modulator was gone, the sound was great. The picture is also good. With the matching casing, it looks like it was factory installed. It's only been 1 day, but SO FAR, SO GOOD.A+ for Amazon and the Boss unit, but C- for Best Buy.

5Great unit - Good picture too. Very pleased.
By David M. Peace
I ordered this unit from Amazon last week as it had all the specs I was looking for. It did not disappoint. I installed the unit in my '08 Toyota Sienna, and not only does it look great, but functions great as well. The picture is good, and the FM modulator works well too. We bought 3 IR headphones for the kids, and they work well too.We will be using this for the first time on a road trip to Palm Springs, so we're excited to keep the kids occupied during the long drive.Just a little note - I first was going to have this installed at Fry's Electronics. I did not get the feeling the people I talked to at the 2 different branches knew what they were talking about. They tried to up-sell me on things I knew I didn't need (like a DIFFERENT FM modulator), and also said they would need to install a bracket in my headliner that would drop down a couple inches. This just didn't sound right to me. I took the unit to Best Buy instead (install would cost $30 more than Fry's). He wired my RCA cables under the seats for free, didn't try to up-sell me on things, and made the unit look fantastic. (no ugly drop-down brackets needed) Best Buy also has a lifetime warranty on their service, which makes me feel happy about the work they did. I know you can't judge a COMPANY by their employees, but I just happened to have a much better experience with Best Buy's $200 install.

5Amazing once you install the firmware upgrade
By M. Moon
Pioneer has acknowledged that the first release of this system had issues ... freezing up, parking break warning for no reason, lack of proper brightness, etc. But they issued an upgrade in July of 2008. THIS UPDATE FIXES EVERYTHING.I have this unit, I used it before the update (lots of problems -- all clearly explained in multiple posts all over the internet). But I downloaded the firmware, installed it, and now it works AWESOME. I truly have to give it to Pioneer for acknowledging their error and spending time to listen to owners and fix it.I love this unit. I hook up my Iphone 3G and watch podcasts, listen to music, and everything. I have SM radio for it and I use the GPS all the time. I use the bluetooth with my iphone and the call clarity is fantastic.I'm serious when I say this is a great value and much better than the D3 unit it replaced, but you have to install the firmware. Do that and I'll love it.

4New update solves a TON of problems
By MorningZ
Pioneer released version "2.0" of the firmware tonight and it addresses:- Showing blank backgrounds on the map's upper left and right of the screen- iPod connection dropping out- better BlueTooth connectivityand- MUCH fast startup time (like 40% increase)This update turns this unit from a "would not recommend" to a "would totally recommend"

5My daughter love this unit
By H. Weiner
I purchased this unit for my daughter's Honda Civic, and WOW she just loves it. I had it installed to work with the existing steering wheel functions and added the IPod adapter which is installed in the glove box. She just plug it in and used voice commands to access her music and podcasts (this uses the same software as the Ford/MS sync systems). As far as the bluetooth, I was amazed how quite it is when I called her I had to ask where she was because it was so quite and clear. The vice commands work real well and the sound is very good for a car audio system. This unit does not have the DVD the ft700 has the cd player. I guess I do not understand why someone needs a dvd player in the front seat angeled toward the driver.Anyway this does everything I need to make sure my daughter is watching the road and not messing with the, music, the phone or directions.Update Pioneer Just released a free firmware update 7/21/08http://pioneer-usa.rsys1.net/servlet/cc6?igjQSRBCQTVojOYRxJhuJHklQgLlVaVR Re: Free Firmware Update for AVIC-F90BT, AVIC-F900BT & AVIC-F700BTThis firmware update applies only to models sold in the U.S.Pioneer has become aware that users of the AVIC-F90BT, AVIC-F900BT and AVIC-F700BT may experience issues with one or more of the following: navigation voice guidance sound quality and reading of guidance information; brightness of display screen; Bluetooth sound quality and hands-free calling; parking brake warning; cataloguing time for voice recognition of iPod content; song order within an album for iPod content; playing of MP3 music files for USB content; volume control for USB and SD content; and, Spanish and French mode operation with an iPod and with navigation voice guidance. The free firmware update is intended to address these issues and improve the overall performance of the AVIC-F Series systems. In addition, a separate CD-ROM containing a revised operation manual will be provided as part of the update process. The firmware update, however, does not address reported concerns regarding the length of boot up times. As is the case with other computers, the length of time to boot up an AVIC-F Series system is largely due to the numerous demands (navigation, entertainment, information, connectivity, compatibility, etc.) placed upon it.10/29/08 ---New free firmware updateThis firmware update (version 2.0) contains important performance improvements relating to, among other things:Boot-up timeBluetooth connectivity (including certain Blackberry models)iPod Touch (v2.0) compatibilityTouch screen responseDisplay brightnessSD and USB media playback. Please visit our website for more information on how to obtain this NEW free update, which can be accessed at the following link:http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/avicfseriesupdate2

4Mixed experience so far, from awesome to awful
By Stan Matofu
6/3/2009 UpdateI've been using the device for a few weeks now. It has a lot of potential and things can be done, but many applications/features lack the quality of a mature product: inconsistent and unfriendly interface, missing features etc.Major issues:1. Small POI database. Only 2 mln POIs, and so far, no way to buy or import additional POIs. Big problem for me, and no easy way around. Finding missing POIs using Google at home takes longer than on a regular GPS unit with built-in POIs. You cannot use Google on the road (or it is much more difficult). Some GPS devices have 6 or more millions of POIs; you can really appreciate it after using the limited 2mln Clarion's database.2. POI search speed can be from 10 seconds to 3 minutes!!! depending on user's entry. 3 minutes - it is just an absurd number. It must be fixed.3. No Bluetooth hands-free calling. (The GPS is supposed to work with a phone. Why not hands-free calling? I need a BT headset? How many more electronics should I carry?)4. Bluetooth dial-up network (DUN) doesn't work with my phone. I was surprised because it was one of the major selling points. Clarion provides only a list of compatible networks and my network is on that list. No list of compatible/supported phones.(My phone's DUN works with my other devices)My hope is that Clarion will keep releasing updates and improving its functionality.Written before 6/3/2009The great:1. Integration with the Internet:a) You can send POIs from the Internet to ClarionMiND. Even with good GPS units finding POIs may be difficult: you either don't find it or you find too many. ClarionMiND lets you plan your trip on your computer at home using Google Maps, and send POIs to the device. Great feature!!!b) Great desktop-class Internet browser. You will be able to do everything you can do on your desktop at home, including Flash videos.c) Google search, and it is integrated with navigation.2. Navigation (I will update this review on route quality after I use the unit more):a) So far routes look good.b) Lane assist. It shows which lane on a multi-lane road you should take.c) Nice job with voice directions. For example, it tells you something like, "go to the right side of the road" in order to prepare you for right turn.d) All info needed for navigation is on the screen: compass heading (N, NE, E...), arrival time, distance, next and current street.e) auto-zoom.3. POIa) Very fast searchb) You can preview POIs on the map. This is something nice and unique. You can select a single or a group of POIs and see them on a temporary map.4. Address entrya) Very fast.b) QWERTY keyboardc) Predictable entry. Only valid keys are active. As you keep entering data, it shows what was found at the top of the screen.d) It remembers previous entry, and lets you re-start search from any level: state, city, street.5. Hardware:a) Gorgeous, high-resolution, large screenb) Touchscreen works well. It is responsive.c) Dedicated hardware buttons for Home, Top Menu, Music/Sound.d) Great to hold in hands6. Free Internet traffic. So far, I didn't find if it is integrated with navigation. There will be an option for radio traffic which, most likely, will be integrated.7. Internet weather, news, email etc8. Fast GPS lock. Less than 30 seconds. The bad:1.POI database is small. I couldn't find retail stores like, Walmart, Target, Costco etc2.The car mount is awful. It is a few 100s dollars device with a "$1" mount. Very difficult to mount/dismount.3.After you mount the device, it automatically limits its Internet functionality. Result: you cannot use the Internet in your garage when the device is mounted. You have to dismount it 1st, check the Internet, mount it again. AWFUL!!! If they wanted to make it safe, they should detect vehicle speed from the GPS.4.Addresses are not displayed in the American format (number street, city zip), but as zip city street number.5.Keyboarda) Inconsistent keys. Sometimes, it is character-only; sometimes, characters and digits.b) Inconsistent behavior: to accept, sometimes you have to click "Back", sometimes "Enter"; sometimes something else.6.Too many keystrokes needed to see the route overview.7.Current time is not displayed during navigation.8.The device gets very hot.9. Video player doesn't accept many video formats. The bottom line:It is a great navigation device: very fast, detailed spoken commands, plenty of details on the screen, great map, good routes. The device could be a perfect GPS but they have to add more POIs, BT hands-free calling, and polish the interface. ClarionMiND works very well with the Internet: it will have more or less of a practical meaning for different people.

4A Linux Geeks Dream
By Richard Jerrido
Overall as a GPS I pretty much agree with "Stan Matofu's" review of the device above. However, I purchased this device in December primarily as a portable media player for my car. Everything else that this device offers was extra, especially considering that I purchased this device for a shade over $100. After having it for a couple of weeks and hacking on it for a while, I would say that I am pretty pleased with the device. Firstly, the device has an Intel Atom Z530, Intel GMA500 (Poulsbo) integrated graphics and 4GB SSD, which is pretty "standard" netbook/UMPC class hardware. With the standard USB port that is built in, one can attach a thumbdrive of practically any size for an infinite amount of music on the go. Additionally, by plugging in a USB keyboard, and switching to virtual console 3 (Ctrl-Alt-F3), you can login as the root user and hack the device to your pleasure (default password is '1234'). Wifi support is pretty rock-solid. DUN support over Bluetooth works well with my Blackberry Storm, which is great because I can use this device as a quasi-internet tablet while in the car(parked of course :) ) The device itself is based on Asianux Midinux Linux which is a offshoot of Fedora. Ubuntu's netbook remix also runs on the device. Installing whichever OS you want on the device is pretty simple, as the USB ports are 1st in the boot order of the device. Heck, even Windows XP runs like a champ on this device. The hardware, according to its specifications, supports up to a 4GB microSD card. I've happily been using a Transcend 8GB microSDHC card with this device to store my music. At its original price of ~$600, there would be no way that I would have bought it. As a ~$100 GPS unit, it is quite serviceable. It has its quirks as all devices do, yet it has some pretty nice features, especially if you can connect it via PPP over Bluetooth so that it gets Internet in-vehicle. Finally, as a portable Linux based computer, it is very much worth the cost alone. I am purchasing a second one, just because it is so hackable.

3Traffic integration is not a strong point.
By Phu
I have used this unit for a few weeks. The navigation part is excellent. Google search is useless without Wifi. POI is a joke...it cannot even find Walmart down the street. In order to get any usefulness in searches, I had to setup Wifi in my car. Traffic integration is awful. The traffic applet cannot zoom. You have to switch screens to see traffic. This cannot be done if you mount the unit. Mounting the unit switches it to car mode. The traffic receiver NK1U works okay if you get a signal. See my review. Overall, the unit is still very rough. I am hopeful that with software updates, traffic can be updated via Wifi instead of the Docking station. I had a Dash Express prior to this unit, but it got stolen. The Dash Express had better traffic information...I miss my now stolen and dead (company is on skeleton crew) Dash Express.

4Feature-Rich HU That Does Nothing But Impress - With Few Gripes
By R. Burger
I've been a Pioneer "Fan Boy" for many years, and have owned a little more than a 1/2 dozen of their mobile audio head units. Each Pioneer/Primier HU I purchased got progressivly better as time went on, and each one offered more and more features. The AVH-5200DVD, so far, has been my favorite Aftermarket HU to date - but my very first video capable unit. I'll break this review down into a few sections.SELECTION / DIY INSTALLATION: I chose this unit for its single-din design, and motorized screen. This allowed for what I considered a "lower profile" install, and helped keep folks in the parking lot from being too impressed with the stereo to consider breaking into my SUV. I own a 2007 Jeep Commander Sport (no OE Boston Acoustics amplifier for you Commander owners out there), and am pretty protective of my possessions as I'm sometimes not in the nicest of areas.Installation was a breeze, especially having installed several in the past. As always, you'll want to look up/purchase the single din conversion kit for your particular vehicle. I'm using a Metra branded kit, mostly b/c it was the only option. I also recommend a wiring harness.Something a little unusual about this unit over previous models is the inclusion of an "external" radio receiver. Its pretty much a small 1"x3"x4" box that contains all the guts for the AM/FM radio. My assumption is that since the screen retracts into the body of the unit, they had to sacrifice some space internally and the radio got the boot. The HU and the radio box simply connect together with a proprietary cable that is included in the packaging.Something else "new" for me was the inclusion of the parking brake wire. You're supposed to ground this on your parking break to allow you to watch video while parked. Aparantly its not recommended to drive with video playing in the front seat. There are ways to "hack" this - but you'll have to do your own Google search on that.***NOTE: Make sure you boot up the unit BEFORE you put the dash back together. The screen screen slides out and into a pre-determined angle and distance from the dash - there are controls in the set-up menu that allows you to chose a "pitch" and 2 distances from the face of the dash. I pitched mine back a few clicks for a better viewing angle, and set it up to extend out a little further due to a lip/overhang on the top of my dashboard.FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Once I had the unit installed, I "oooooh'd" and "aaaaaaah'd" over the glossy finish, the smooth action of the screen sliding out and into position. The unit should be fully booted up by the time the screen locks into position. There are tactile buttons on the exterior that made sense to me. Track Skip/Advance and Reverse, Source, Menu, Mode (for switching from possible GPS mode, regular mode, rear camera, and rear seat video), and of course Eject and Screen "Hide/Open". Since the unit is a touch screen, I feel a little better about using the "physical" buttons to advance songs, rather than having to look away from the road to change tracks. When the car is shut off, the unit waits a few seconds, beeps to remind you take the removeable anti-theft faceplate with you, and quietly retracts the screen. The anti-theft face is sort of a joke, I'm not sure if it's keyed into this specific unit, and its removal doesn't radically alter the appearance of the unit - so a thief might not know the faceplate is missing until they've smashed their way into the car.INTERFACE: The interface is a little confusing to learn at first, with some items not being labeled. You'll want to play with it a bit before cruising around and trying to operate it. Keep your manual handy in the glove box if you ever get confused. Its quick and easy to pick-up though, and I mastered it within a few short days. The 7" screen, animations, and graphics are great - fonts and displays are easy to understand a read - even while driving. The unit is a show-stopper, and will impress your passengers the moment the screen slides out and blazes to life. The touch screen controls are intuitive, though the sliding motion will be a little awkward to you iPhone and BlackBerry Storm users out there as the pages don't "glide" after you've lifted your finger. Very little pressure is needed to activate something on the screen. Just a VERY light tap. You can calibrate the screen too if you need - but mine operates flawlessly out of the box.The screen is a matte texture (very smart) - which guts down on glare from other light sources like the sure and reduces finger prints/smudges.You can also change the colors of the external lighting - and the interface colors to match your car's esisting lighting. The ability to make your own custom wallpapers is amazing as well.AUDIO PERFORMANCE: The MOSFET powered amplifier built into the unit pumps crisp clean highs and punchy powerful lows from the Commander's 6 speaker factory speakers (haven't replaced them yet). It currently pushs two 3.5" mid/high speakers, two 6x9" woofers in the front doors, and two 6.5" mid-rangers in the rear doors. The sound fills the cabin of this fairly large SUV nicely with minimal distortion at fairly loud volumes.I'll be upgrading to a 5-channel amp shortly, using all 3 of the RCA inputs on the reverse of the unit for front, rear, and sub componants. The menu gives you a great EQ options with 8 bands, bass boost control, 3 "loudness levels", Front/Rear/Sub crossovers, and much much more. Pretty much everything you need to build an audiophile set up.iPod integration works well. I was a little disappointed that they put the USB input on the front, and not the back as I'm unable to hide the cables for a clean install. It's nice though, for people that want to play files off of a USB flash drive, etc...I'm using an iPod Classic 160gb loaded down to about 80% capacity. Songs read clear, with song ID tags loading promptly with just a slight delay. There is also a delay when using the SongLink feature - which allows you to search for songs/genre/album/artist based on what is currently playing. In some cases it took several minutes to load up some results. I'm ASSUMING that this is because of the sheer number of songs I have loaded onto the Classic, and the fact that it is a hard drive based player. My wifes flash memory-based iPod loads song data instantly, and has a much faster SongLink retrieval time. So this is probably iPod technology-based, not Pioneer Hu software-based.I organize all oy my music by genre - so tearing through the organization tree is fast and efficient. The "Alphabet Search" is fantastic too. You slide your finger along the alphabet for the first letter in your search, and a LARGE magnification of that letter appears in the middle of the screen, making it easier and safer to see while driving.Album art loads a few seconds after the song begins to play and looks pretty sharp - it even animates a little when it loads - making for a flashy display.VIDEO PERFORMANCE: DVD's play just as they're supposed to - like any normal DVD player. Menu items are selected by simply touching the option with your finger. The unit supports several aspect ratios - most of my movie collection is in 16:9 widescreen format - so it fits perfectly. The 16:10 stuff looks great too.I watched the original Star Wars trilogy (not the new CGI garbage Lucas put out recently) in its entirety on my way too and from Gatlinburg with nary a hiccough or hang up.It is capable of reading video from an iPod as well. I'm having issues with it reading video from my Classic 160gb, but my wifes flash-based iPod Nano reads perfectly. My issue with the Classic is probably the encoding method I chose to convert the music videos to that I had intended to watch.EXPANDABILITY!!! I, personally, am happy that Pioneer decided to make this unit one of their more "expandable" head units - giving the consumer a boatload of technology to add onto their unit at their leisure and in small increments as your personal cash flow allows.Just a few of these "upgrades" include:Bluetooth (if you didn't buy the unit with BT built in - the AVH-5200BT)HD Radio - I don't personally listen to the radio, unless its a little conservative talk radio, and thats mostly on the AM bandsSirius/XM SatilliteRear View Cameraand - most notably - GPS NavigationYou can also add rear seat video monitors utilizing the rear video output on the unit,Now on to some of my gripes about this unit:No remote control - every single Pioneer HU I've ever purchased came with a remote. This one, for whatever reason - did not. At $500 for a HU, I'd think a remote might not be too much to ask.Expansion module price - I'm also a little disappointed in the price of the expandsion modules. Dropping $500 on a HU, then another $400 on a GPS unit might seem a little insane - but if you look at the prices of head units that INCLUDE GPS, the price comes out on par, or cheaper, than an "all inclusive" option. The SOMETIMES slow crawling speed of the iPod library search - even though this is probably iPod related - a 15minute long search for a tune is more than little rediculous. The integrated search on the iPod itself would only take a dozen or so seconds - MAX. Of course - 100-160gb of music/movie files could be a little overwhelming. Perhaps Jobs will offer a little support and help Pioneer find a way to speed up this process.

this item is really great i received it on April the 23th and really everything is good but the only thing i dnt like about this item is the USB it is on the front and that is the only problem i had with this unit other than that everything is great the equalizer is perfect , themes are really good and even the screen is assume i recommend this avh better than the 5000 , or the , 5100 avh , last thing i wanted to say if u have you have Pioneer CD BTB200 its not gonna be fully compatible with the avh-p5200 but it will work good but you will not be able to save the contacts into ur device

3Return to Sender!
By Surefire
The Pioneer 5200 DVD is a great head unit. Crisp clean display and menue's that are easy to navigate. The DVD plays movies easily but requires a button be installed on front dash installations so that you can watch or view movies from the front. This basically overrides a factory safety feature. Now the bad news, I had made a mistake when I purchased this unit without the built in blue tooth. I had intended to buy the BT model but missed it at check out. I found the pioneer external Bluetooth module and called pioneer to varify it would work with this particular head unit. The support person for pioneer told me that it would work just the same as if it were built in. Unfortunetly after having the unit professionally installed I found that information to be untrue! The add on Bluetooth pioneer CD- BTB200 unit is at best the saddest handsfree attachment on the market. It is not at all what you have grown to expect from a company synonymous with excellence. This unit has to be sinked each and every time you get in your car. Long process and it has none of the features the built in unit has. So in short Pioneer needs to discontinue the CD-BTB200 as it is unworthy of bearing Pioneers name. At the end of the day this mistake cost me several hundred dollars in installation and un installation and shipping fees. When I explained everything that had happened to the head of support for pioneer he did not seem to care much one way or another, almost as though he didn't think that a poor review of a 2010 flagship model would make much of a difference. I think he is wrong, I think the public does care. In short if you want a great head unit with built in Bluetooth buy it built in to the unit. Do not buy the CD-BTB200. Additionally the add on with the head unit costs more than if you bought it built in. I wound up sending both back and purchased the AVH 5200 BT and it works perfectly, I love it!
