By Paul Belikian
There are both good and bad things about this unit that a potential buyer should be aware of. I will say if one can put up with the cons, the unit is a good unit. If you believe they are not important to you and you go ahead and get this radio, you have been warned. Many of my pros and cons may sound like a `gripe' or that I am unhappy with the unit - they are, because the unit does not work as the listed and published specs advertise, and these issues are so simple to fix via a firmware / OS update, but there is no support. In general, I really suggest not being distracted from noticing the lack of features by a silicon chested model posted all over the product's listing.Cons:The first and foremost one is so important that it doesn't have a number. The published specs for this radio and the unit's capability are not the same. The published specs on this site (and from any site selling this radio) are from the unknown manufacturer. They re-use the same pictures, the same marketing information, and the same incorrect specification. I am positive that the resellers and wholesalers that sell this radio can contact the manufacturer to resolve issues, but these companies rather not support their customers in this manner for one reason or another. These sellers always seem to instruct you to `read the manual' or have a professional install the unit. Question, what if you have read the manual and had a professional install the unit? You are out of luck. In the US, these companies would be in court within days being held accountable, not true with Asian-based sellers.1 - Absolutely no product support at all. This product is sold through `wholesalers and resellers' who use that as an excuse: "As wholesalers we do not provide information regarding the usability or connectivity and compatibility of the various devices we sell. For better understanding, you can carefully read the product descriptions given on our listing or refer to the manual included in the box."2 - Any product issues or warranty service requires the unit to be shipped back to the seller's `warehouse' in China. I mean ANY. If a screw is missing from the box, unit has to go to China. Why? See number 1 above. By the way, `warehouse' to these sellers mean their supplier, not that they really have a warehouse in China.3 - Units that do not have specs as advertised. If the unit's specs say the unit can do X, you order it, wait for it, install the unit and it doesn't do X, then the only thing you can do is return it. While you can return it, you will meet resistance because the unit has been installed and they cannot re-sell it to someone else. In most cases, the return shipping will be paid for, but you will be subjected to a restocking fee. Keep in mind that if you paid for someone to install the radio, you have lost that money too. Also, to most people, time is money and so you have lost a lot of time ordering it, waiting for it, installing it, then sending it back because they sent you the wrong item or the published specs are false and the unit's specs are not the same. Be aware that this is a common tactic that some wholesalers and reseller do - they know in most cases, people will just keep the product and live with its issues. I will say that there are some established businesses that do take the product back with no hassles and hats off to them. However, I also suggest that they read this and decide not to sell these types of products if they really care about customer service and their business reputations.4 - On my unit, the GPS antenna was dead out of the box. I had to use one from the radio I had just replaced. The unit entire unit would have to be shipped back to China for warranty repair. Why? See #2 above. This means having it uninstalled, removing the antennas, and pulling the wiring from the carpeting and their locations. If you paid for someone to install the radio, you have lost that money.5 - Firmware / OS. The OS of this unit is WinCE 6 and is dated July 2011; I bought my radio on November 2012. A firmware update would resolve all of the software issues I will list below. However, you are not allowed to update the firmware or the OS. With today's technology, the units USB connection, its Wi-Fi capabilities, and it's 2 SD card slots, it's a no brainer to make OS and firmware updates available. I assume it is because they do not have any updated firmware, but that is an educated guess. Another educated guess is that they do not want to be legally liable for turning units into bricks if the update is not done correctly. That is a valid point, but they are legally liable for false advertising the unit's specifications, but I think the lawyers can fight over that point.6 - OS errors. Should (when) some type of an error occur(s), you'll get the normal Windows popup message expected to be seen on a PC or laptop computer. The radio's user interface disappears, and you get the WinCE explorer in the background ...along with the task bar, Start Button, and Start Menu - Kind of cool if you're a tech-geek, not cool when you are driving. You can look at your Program Files folders and network connections, but you can't add or update devices or see the drivers for the installed hardware. Hint: If you like to see this type of thing, just remove the GPS SD Card while the GPS software loads and the unit will enter into this mode. Not that I recommend this, I'm just pointing out there are better ways to handle errors than letting Windows handle them.7 - ATSC TV. Be careful here, the unit's specifications in this listing states the unit receives ATSC broadcasts, in fact it's one of the highlights of the "Road Emperor Phoenix". However, this is not true. The unit receives ATSC-MH broadcasts which are intended for mobile devices and ATSC-MH is NOT the same as ATSC. Not many stations in the USA have adopted this format when broadcasting their content. For example, in Los Angeles California, there are 27 ATSC broadcast stations, only 4 of them simultaneously broadcast in ATSC-MH format, none of which are English. I would not have bought this unit if I had known it just received ATSC-MH broadcasts; I actually bought it because the specs say it does pick up ATSC broadcasts.8 - ATSC TV. Channel selection numbers do not match with the stations; for Example, in Los Angeles, the station KNBC is on channel 4. On this unit, the numbers of the channels are actually in the order they are found in the channel search setup. KNBC could be channel 1 or channel 3 - that is, if I could pick up KNBC on this unit.9 - Picture in Picture. The unit's specifications in this listing states the unit has Picture in Picture; it does NOT have Picture in Picture functionally. I want to emphasize that it states this in two different places, if only to point out there are errors in the listed specs.10 - CD playing. When the unit reaches the end of a CD, it doesn't know what to do. Pressing any key other than "Pause" displays "Invalid Key" on the screen. Setting the unit to "Repeat" does not get past this glitch either. Hint: Press "Pause" wait 5 seconds, then "Pause" again to start the CD from the beginning.11 - CD playing. No CD_TEXT capabilities. The marketing group for this product pushes the `impressive' features, but the unit doesn't have the basic common sense features. When playing a CD, you will see "Track 1", "Track 2" you will NOT see the names of the tracks. With the `advanced' features of this unit, not having such a basic capability really diminishes the meaning of any so called `advanced features'.12 - Bluetooth. No phone book or address book, only history. This forces the user to open their phone, pick the contact and dial that contact from their phone OR read the phone and enter it into the radio's keypad. Driving is not safe (and illegal in some states) without `hands free' phone operation. Without the address book capability in the Bluetooth interface, this unit does not make driving safer, but it makes it more dangerous.13 - GPS. No functioning GPS software is included, which is fine. The problem here is the sellers and wholesalers will not provide any type of suggestion as to what software can be used on this unit. There are a lot of selling points as to the GPS hardware features in the specs, but many (if not all) are dependent on the GPS software which they refuse to speak of. Hint: The best GPS software for these units are iGo8 or iGo Primo.14 - GPS. The specifications state that the default COM port and baud rate are COM2 @9600. This IS correct. However, default implies that these can be changed and they cannot be changed. While changing the COM port would be pointless, the baud rate is one of the slowest and should be USER adjustable to more modern speeds up to 115K. The result with the baud rate being set at 9600 is sluggish GPS response; it works OK, but it is not updated as fast as a unit with a higher communication baud rate setting.15 - System time. For some reason, the unit jumps ahead 2 hours then stays 2 hours off. I would think this has something to do with the RDS synchronizing the clock except this unit does not offer that feature and I seriously doubt the radio stations I listen to in Los Angeles are all 2 hours off.16 - GPS + System time. As mentioned before, the clock 2 hours ahead. The GPS clock is correct because it receives this information from the GPS satellites. The result is you have two different times when you switch between the GPS screen and any other screen that shows the time.17 - Radio. For some reason when the radio is selected for the first time after starting the car, the first station in preset memory is selected, not the last station that was being listened to. This happens on AM and FM.18 - Radio, AM. No AGC - station's volume goes up and down depending on signal strength which is normal for AM; so normal in fact, that almost every other manufacturer uses AGC to level out the volume from AM stations - except who ever made this radio.19 - iPod control. The normal navigation keys are displayed but do not navigate through the selections. You have to use the virtual iPod buttons on the screen to navigate through the songs.20 - iPod communication. My unit seems to lose some type communication when playing from the iPod interface. The music plays, but the remain time, artist, and song titles get frozen on the radio's display. Yes, my iPod is one that *should* work and yes it has its latest firmware - NAV software NOT running.21 - Wi-Fi. There are no profiles. This means for any time you want to connect to a Wi-Fi system, you have to enter the encryption key. While I suspect the unit is designed to connect to `open' systems, I use it to connect to my cellular phone's hot spot. If, for some reason the Wi-Fi connection is broken, one has to enter the encryption key when trying to connect to the same connection again.22 - Wi-Fi. The unit comes with a `no-name' B/G Wi-Fi dongle. You cannot use a newer `N' type dongle because you are not able to load any drivers into the WinCE OS of this unit. If the `no-name' dongle is lost because you swapped it out for your USB thumb drive, or the Wi-Fi dongle dies, you cannot use some other brand's B/G USB dongle as you can't load drivers for it. The included nameless dongle is just that: No model number or brand name, good luck finding another one from another source. If you need another, see #1 and 2 above.23- EQ. Has limited settings. Loudness, Bass and Treble. When most people describe EQ, they don't expect to see Treble, Bass, or Loudness controls. They expect to see variable sliders for certain audio bands that can be boosted or limited all across the audio spectrum. In this regard the spec is correct, but it certainly is not `EQ'.24 - Steering Wheel Control. The specs say the unit supports steering wheel control but the specs also say that the installation of this feature is not supported by the `End User.' They say they support it if the user has a professional installer install the unit, but not the user. They do mention the three wires in the manual but they do not describe how or where to connect the three wires. Steering wheel control can get complicated, but it is just as complicated as hooking up the speakers which, by the way, they also recommend a professional do. In reality, the steering wheel control in my car was easy to hook up. I used two of the three wires and programmed the wheel's functions by following the setup menu in the radio for the steering wheel control.25 - 3G. 3G is dated technology. There are no drivers or updates to the unit's firmware to support 4G dongles.26 - The manual does not mention or describe many many many of the menus the radio can display. In fact, the `manual' is a two-sided fold out that doesn't say much at all but it does have nice pictures of a silicon chested girl in it.Pro's:1 - Nice user interface, it is consistent and *somewhat* customizable.2 - Sharp display and accurate touchscreen.3 - Good amount of audio power output.4 - Plays multiple different format audio and video files from the USB and SD card slots.5 - Wiring diagram is correct, but does not show the specifics for the radio. For example, it shows the wiring for an external TV tuner which, in this unit, is built-in.Why is support from Chinavision terrible? By wolfje
The delivery from China to the EU was very quick, less than one week. Installing the unit was a bit of a hassle. The 2DIN standard slot of my Volvo was too high for the unit. As a result the entire unit was bolted to the slot and the dashboard panel fixed firmly in place. Resulting in an ugly gap at the bottom. Fixed this aesthetic problem with a small strip of insulation rubber. I also ended up NOT connecting to unit to my steering wheel controls (yes I did take a very close look at the original unit as I disconnected it) the diagram and hilarious manual ("if user no end critical connect, please fail") are too incomplete and vague. The unit itself then. The overall wow-factor is certainly there. It's easy to change the start-up logo, folder is on the SatNav SD-card. It's also easy to change the display colour setting. However it isn't possible to change the back light colour of the physical buttons. That is a dissatisfier considering the RoadEmperor (RE) is their flagship product. I got the Radio, SatNav, iPod and TV to work (TV reception is dependent on quality and availability of free-to-air channels - and disable the "break on" function in the settings menu). The DVD does NOT work, it simply cannot load DVD's or CD's. Yes I've tried just about anything, the thing is broken. Another bug is the fact that you cannot have your iPoad connected and playing and run the SatNav at the same time. The GPS unit will loose it's connection to the device. This annoys me to no end, the main reason I bought the RE is for the iPod functionality. There are a few other minor bugs, the menu button in iPod mode doesn't bring you to the menu. Other buttons do work. WiFi works, 3G is very dodgy. I suggest using your smartphone as a WiFi hotspot and connect the RE to your smartphone, much better speed but still not all that fast. But hey how many old Volvo's have WiFI?! The radio works fine, although the Alternative Frequency function has an attitude and the radio will always start at preset 1 with me. What does work is the following: I've connected a portable USB drive (1TB elements drive by western digital) to the USB cable with all sorts of movies, MP3's etc. That works like a charm! The screen resolution of the RE is simply amazing. Overall I've been using the RE about 2 months I'm pleased but would not recommend this unit for people who are uncomfortable with tinkering with hard- and software.

a very finished team. although I go over without the adapter 3g wifi and I even have not been able to probe these functions, everything else works perfectly. I live in colombia and after obtaining the local maps the GPS works to thousand marvels. the similar TV (in my country there is no digitalis even) is of very bad quality, but I believe that it owes to the antenna that is very deficient, soon I will install better other one and I believe that it will give better results. the blue tooth works perfectly with my sony ericson x10 and with the iphone of my lady. the image HD is perfect in the reproduction of DVD. install a camera of reverse and also his functioning is ideal. I can see the photos that I take with my camera immediately raise myself to the alone car placing the pill SD in the team, without interrupting the movie that my son sees in the rear Headrest, and non-stop the functioning of the gps that keeps on giving instructions with voice. also I can see and edit files of word, and excel on the screen.only it is necessary to me to prove the function 3g wifi which I will do once the adapter comes to me that the seller stayed of sending me, since as I said to them earlier I do not come in the box.with all these features, i think this team is the most comprehensive on the market and a very reasonable price.totally recommend this product
