4A really excellent product
By Dan Moore
I'm glad I didn't read the review here before I bought this unit, or I'd have missed out on what is for me a great unit. Let me address the previous review line by line with the differences I see.- no support for cd changers but many feel that because of usb drives and ipods, changers are legacy...whatever!What's a CD? Does anybody use them anymore? :)- touch screen has a sweet spot that is small and off-center so it's easy to make the wrong selection and have to waste time on a redo...Haven't noticed it yet. There is a calibration for the screen that needs/can be done so maybe that would fix your issue.- no IR functionality which means wireless remotes cannot be used and this unit really needs one...I never liked remotes in a car. I've had three head units that had remotes, including the one I just took out. Never put a battery in them. The head unit is arms length away, the remote is under the seat, stuck to a french fry, whatever. What is the remote for? I know some people like them, I just never have.- xm works great BUT xm traffic is not supported, only msn direct...Yeah, XM traffic would be better. MSN is a no go. Per their website they are shutting down the service. However, all the online reviews of this unit say getting the MSN is a no brainer, that it's data in invaluable. Go figure.- no exterior mute button....Hold down the voice prompt button and it mutes. I luckily noticed this in the manual when I was perusing it during the install.- installing the hd radio module disables regular am/fm functionality...Hmm, that's odd. I asked about it and wasn't told this was an issue. I didn't get HD radio so I cannot comment.- route guidance has no introductory statement to start your route, you just start driving and eventually it begins giving directions...Good. The less it talks the better. I have people in the car, the telephone going, stuff to remember to do. Just tell me where to turn already, skip the rest.- route guidance audio does not identify by exit number, street or exit name, just take next and you must look at screen for what next is...Hmm, good point. I didn't think about this before. I guess refer to the point above for me. Just keep me from blasting by the turn. I'll handle the rest. The road, distance, and direction of turn are on screen.- last unit i had gave me my vehicle speed as well as the current posted speed limit, this unit gives neither...Agreed! Sorta. I love having the GPS speed on screen for some strange reason. The GPS speed is available on a setup/calibration screen, but not on the main screen to my knowledge. I guess I can get my GPS calculated speed fix there. As for the speed limit on the GPS, I think I'll trust the handy dandy signs that were happily stuck in the ground for my personal amusement along the side of the road.- adding a route is real work. to start a route you must type each and every complete word exactly, it does not help you complete words with suggested common choices nor is it flexible when searching...Type in part of the word and hit enter, it'll show the most likely matches. The route seemed perfectly easy to enter to me, and thank God, the keyboard layout is a QWERTY so you know where the letter is without singing the alphabet song.- when recalculating a route, it says nothing and starts the process very slowly.Again, thank God. Say less, do more. I hate it when you are going off route manually and you don't want to key in your change. "Recalculating route....Recalculating route...etc, etc until you give in and either cancel the route or get through your detour."- there is a search by address voice function, but it's slow and awkward, using it is a real struggle...All voice commands are slow and awkward to me. I've been amazed at how accurate this thing has been so far.- no voice commands for basics such as "go home", "cancel route", etc. so you must touch screen through several menu layers for them...I haven't tried this yet. Go home should be a voice command. I agree. Good points. I did take the time to setup my custome home screen. It has icons for cancel route and go home so they are right there on the home screen. Nice.POI TRULY SUCKS...I already tried some POIs. They were not in there as often as I'd like so I agree. But, via the SD card you can load POIs so I'll give it a pass. If it's something I need I'll load it. If not, oh well. I can always look up the address. I did take the time to load some POIs just to see how this worked. I now have every Hooters in the US on my GPS. Sorta overkill as I really don't like chicken wings that much but considering how easy it was to add thousands of esoteric POI waypoints, I think it would be hard to knock what they have built in.So far, this unit has been pretty much everything I wanted. I pulled out and replaced a Clarion 675 VXD with this Pioneer. It's so much better than the Clarion it's hard to imagine. Everything works as it's supposed to on the Pioneer. Not so on the Clarion. And Pioneer is using Parrott's bluetooth technology. I love Parrott.I do have a couple of squawks that aren't mentioned previously. The unit, like everything in this country today, has a legal warning. Of course, somebody lost a lawsuit somewhere along the way and not only do we have to agree not to be stupid once, we now have to agree every time the unit boots. I've sort of resigned myself to this fact of life, however, there is a quirk with the Pioneer. Until you ok the legal screen, some of the functionality doesn't work. The iPod voice recognition it does at every boot up doesn't start until you have clicked ok and if you have just updated your iPod this VR load can take several minutes. If you are on the audio screen, as I often am, the warning screen doesn't appear. It's a navigation warning screen, so audio is playing from your last song but the unit is effectively nerfed until you click ok, no VR load, no audio commands, etc. The backup camera does work and it does immediately, which is good. It can be frustrating to jump in the car, fire up and want to start a phone conversation right away but the voice commands won't work till the VR load finishes, the VR load won't start till you click ok, and none of that will start till you click ok on the nav screen which probably isn't up and running. It would be nice if after 30 seconds you haven't clicked ok, it just times out and starts it's normal process or if the warning screen would pop up over navigation and audio so you can click ok. (Update to this note.) Turns out the issue above is actually a quirk of my installation. We may have accidentally performed a work around to eliminate the speed sensing ability of the Pioneer, which would enable the use of the navigation system, and video playback, while the vehicle is in motion. The issue I noted above is a side effect of this work around. Out of the box, this issue apparently does not exist, but you cannot use the navigation system above 10mph, which is in itself annoying in my opinion.

3I expected more from the flagship
By D. Carlile
I've had this head unit in my car for about a month now, and overall, I was expecting more from the best Pioneer has to offer. The good:The navigation system seems to be at about par with other navigation systems I have used, functionality-wise. I don't use POI, so I can't comment on that. The audio sounds far better than the stock stereo that came with my porsche.I really like the way I can make the button lights on the front perfectly match my dash lights. Also, the custom startup graphic is cool. It makes it feel like it was designed for my car.My iPhone pairs automatically through bluetooth when I start my car, and receiving and making calls works exactly as I expected.I like being able to play music directly from the sd card. The touchscreen works just the way I want it to, except I really want to flick the scrolling menus the way I can on my iPhone. You can't have everything. The not so good:I'm not amazed by the way the map looks. It doesn't look as refined or aesthetically pleasing as other systems I have used such as Garmin or Tomtom. The 3d buildings are frankly a little cheesy. The MSN service is being discontinued so there is no traffic info. One thing that really drives me batty is the way it automatically starts playing music from my iphone when I dock it, even if I am listening to another audio source. Sometimes I just want to charge my phone, and there doesn't appear to be any way to modify that functionality.I think the audio devices UI is poorly designed. I have the HD radio tuner, an iPhone dock, and Sirius radio. The HD tuner reverts to regular AM and FM when an HD signal isn't present, so there is no reason to have the regular AM and FM devices in the audio menu, yet they are still there and there is no way to make them go away. All of the other possible devices are also on the menu, just greyed out. Why do I need a greyed out XM icon in my menu? i realize I have a special menu I can customize, but it would have been much better to be able to customize all of the menus by hiding the icons I don't need. It is cluttered and clumsy. My biggest complaint is about the ui for the audio devices themselves. The ui for Sirius and HD radio are roughly the same. It seems like a generic interface was developed in order to avoid designing a custom interface for each of these devices, and it falls short. You have to push a button on the screen to cycle through the metadata associated with a song playing on Sirius, so you can never see the channel title, channel number, genre, band name, and song title at once. You can only cycle through one at a time. The preset menu is poorly implemented. In the regular AM and FM radio UI (which I don't use), when you make a preset, it displays the frequency of the channel in the area next to the preset number. In Sirius and HD radio, it is blank. You have to remeber which ones have already been set and what they are set to. I had this same level of functionality in my 1969 Chevy pickup. There is no list of Sirius channels, just a seek button where you have to click through them one by one, or type in the number, if you remember it, and who can remember that many channels? All in all, I expected more.

1huge disappointment...
By P. Shaw
we were recently in los angeles, a city that i do not know very well for a few days house hunting and needed to do a lot of driving using a car with this unit installed. after only half a day, we switched to using a $100 sony hand held with a much better result.a few observations: - the poi function is pretty much useless except to locate a bank of america; - can't locate many common poi's so it comes back with the wrong results; - no ir capability so no remote...believe me, this unit really needs one; - need to hold voice button for more than 5 seconds for mute...which is a real pain; - traffic service only available with msn direct which is now a discontinued service;- route guidance is just flat out horrible... - can't find many addresses - sometimes instructions takes you in circles - no "previously selected" for choosing city, you need to re-enter city name over and over each and every time - no introductory statement to begin your route and sometimes there is no voice for quite some time so be prepared for lots of u-turns. - slow to give guidance instructions, sometimes already passed turn or in wrong lane - no exit clarification, just "take next" is all you hear - OK button is located in the very top left corner close to and just above the SCROLL button and the sweet spot is at the bottom of the buttons so it's very easy to hit the wrong one and have to re-enter your entire route all over again. (i have done it many times) - i won't say the database is old, it finds most 2007 locations and a few 2008 locations but cannot finds some 2005 locations that my iPhone nav easily finds...go figure! - map does not display the city you are currently in (when house hunting in LA where cities run together and you take down an address, you have no idea which city it's in) - does not display your current speed or the posted speed limit - when changing map scale, display changes orientation - voice commands are limited and do not work well, for example: no commands for cancel route or for home route so you have work you way thru menu layers for them. also when using this units very limited (6 or 7) voice commands, the touch screen feature is disabled so you have to wait for this unit to tell you what your choices are before you can say them.anyone that rates this unit highly is either selling them or a complete idiot.i do not recommend this unit, it's pure rubbish!my very last anything made by pioneer! they made a lot of fixes and instead of making them available to purchasers of this model with an apology, they released the changes in a new model, the z120...??? seems pioneer is more interested in selling new units than satisfying buyers of their old units!june 10th update...sold this unit on ebay and the idiot that bought it was so excited about his purchase! ha! replaced it with a kenwood dnx6980, which actually works!

4I love this nav system!
By D. Matheny
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2EFAJ45OUM36K [*** UPDATE 9/9/2010 - It turns out that firmware version 2.003, which I just installed tonight, fixes the bug where you have to press OK before your phone connects to the AVIC-Z120BT. I tested this out and it works as expected now. ***]I got this AVIC-Z120BT unit a few days ago and installed it in my 2009 Nissan Frontier. The install did take a while; but, I had several quotes by some car audio installation places and I decided I'd be better off doing it myself and saving the money. So far, I am absolutely loving having this system in my truck! In the attached video, I tried to go over some of the main features of this unit. I'll also try to cover most of the same material here for people that don't want to spend the time to watch the video. Here are the things I'm loving about this Pioneer navigation system:1) The sound quality is very good. The radio reception is also exceptional for both AM and FM.2) The media source selection is great! This unit supports playing from CDs & DVDs (including MP3s from either), SD cards with either video or music, iPods (using an additional interface cable), USB keys, or the internal AM/FM tuner. You can also add an HD radio tuner, although I didn't add that feature. Personally, I love that I can stick an SD card with all my music in this unit and it is always available to me without having to mess with an FM transmitter or hook up my phone to the receiver.3) The navigation system itself is very good. The maps are up to date in my area, and it looks like new maps can be downloaded from Pioneer when they are available. It has all the standard nav features, like being able to adjust the scale or change the top of the map to be either North or to be inline with your current heading. It also offers turn-by-turn guidance, waypoints, and can be controled using voice commands - although I haven't played with this much.4) The Bluetooth interface on the receiver is amazing! It automatically downloads the contacts from my phone whenever it turns on and then I have access to all of my contacts through the nav system. Even though my Android phone does NOT support voice dialing over Bluetooth, I can now use the voice dialing feature of this receiver and it automatically dials my phone.5) The voice interface in general is very good. It handles everything from voice dialing to switching inputs - even when I'm driving down the highway. The included mic works fine for phone calls in the truck, although it does sound like I'm talking on a speaker phone (which I basically am when using this system).6) Incoming calls on this system work very well. A small overlay pops up on the screen that lets you answer incoming calls, hang up, etc... It also mutes (or turns down) the currently playing audio during the phone call.7) The backup camera is a great addition. It switches on automatically when the truck is in reverse, and it can also be used in conjunction with the map view - which will be great for towing.8) The system boots fairly quickly. The backup camera and previously selected music source are available almost instantly, where the navigation system and other controls are available after about 15 seconds. My Android phone typically takes about 45 seconds to connect from the time the system first starts up.9) I should have shown this in the video, but the screen tilt can be adjusted if you need it to angle up a bit. In my truck, I don't need it to tilt at all; so I tend to forget about that.10) The interface looks great and is very easy to use! The system also looks great in my truck.11) You can set an anti-theft password through a 'secret' interface, and the system will prompt for the password if the backup power is ever cut. I think this is a dubious 'anti-theft' feature since the system could easily be stolen and the thieves wouldn't find out about the password until they were back at the secret lair :). I guess I would have the satisfaction of knowing they probably couldn't use it...Although I absolutely love this Pioneer nav system, there are some quirks in the firmware that I hope will be addressed by future releases:1) [*** UPDATE - This is fixed in firmware version 2.003. ***] When booting the system, you need to press OK on the warning screen BEFORE the system connects to your phone. Otherwise, you won't be able to voice dial until the car is turned off and back on again. If the system boots up into the map screen, this is pretty easy since the prompt will show before the map is displayed. If, on the other hand, the system boots into the media mode, the prompt won't even display until you manually switch to either the home screen or the navigation system - and it can be easy to forget until you need to make a call...2) The AM and FM presets are named based on the text being broadcast by the station. That makes no sense in my case, so I end up with presets with names like "ive,". I wish that could just be turned off and I could just have the frequencies displayed - or it would also be great if I could name the presets myself. Normally, I don't mind remembering the preset numbers - but this interface doesn't really lend itself to that. Hopefully this will be fixed/changed soon!3) I wish this system would show album art for songs that are on the SD card. I called Pioneer and verified that isn't supported in the current firmware.4) On bright days, the display tends to be a bit washed out - even on the brightest setting. It's still visible, but just barely. I may end up getting my front windows tinted to help out with this.Overall, I really love this system and would highly recommend it if you want an integrated nav/bluetooth/multimedia system in your vehicle. The combined feature-set that this added to my truck wouldn't have even been possible a few years ago; and, the Pioneer pulls it all off with a very nicely integrated user interface. There are some quirks in the firmware, but I think they should all be easily addressed by future firmware updates - I just hope Pioneer does us all the favor of actually updating the firmware!I will update this review to reflect any changes in my opinions, or if new firmware versions are released.

3Overall excellent, slightly disappointing in some aspects
By E. Harp
I have been using this receiver in my 2010 Toyota Tundra for several weeks now. I will simply go over the points that mattered to me. This is an updated review.- sound quality: excellent. Very happy in this regard. I have this connected at the line level to a JL Audio 400 watt amp and Morel Tempo speakers. Professionally installed.- navigation: so far so good. The voice quality is great. The UI works well and I haven't found it slow when searching for an address or a POI. I like how it behaves as your drive.- iPhone integration: generally very nice. Both for video and music and phone contacts. The audio quality I am getting for better music files is what I had hoped for. I am using the Pioneer iPod cable. There are glitches here and there, such as transitions. For example, shot off the unit/vehicle with video playing, then when the unit starts up again, the video doesn't play but you hear the sound. This continues even after acknowledging the safety screen. Can be lived with.Voice quality during phone calls appears to be good. Or should I say nobody has complained nor misunderstood me. I did move a microphone a few times before settling on the rear edge of the visor. This is a less hidden, less integrated place to put it, but this places the microphone much closer to my voice. Sound levels in my Tundra aren't too bad. The doors are lined with Dynamat.- voice recognition/control: overall surprisingly good. There is a bug that happens if your phone connects to the unit before you have acknowledged the safety notice for the GPS. Voice commands related to the phone refuse to work at all. This bug earlier led me to believe that the VR was useless. Work around for this is to hit that OK button in GPS mode as soon as possible after starting up the unit. I have used the VR even for specifying an address or searching for a point of interest, and it all works well. The VR voice is computer generated and not nearly as smooth as the GPS voice. One of several points of integration between the unit's separate systems that could use some improving. So overall, I am very happy with this choice. I have not used such a unit in the past, so my expectations were actually quite high. I am used to better integration between features. I am however quite impressed with the overall quality of the user interface. Much nicer than I have seen on earlier receivers. Useful and looks good, not a silly display of flashing graphics. I believe it could be improved on, but I develop user interfaces for a living, so take my opinion as coming from a more critical point of view.Six months update: really not happy with the navigation in this unit. Makes mistakes too often and in a few cases dangerous situations (big city, lots of traffic, etc.). The alternate view thrown at you at big intersections isn't helpful and causes more confusion at bad moments. I could go on for an hour why I don't like this GPS. I have resorted to using a portable Garmin sitting on the dashboard. That's right, $1300+ "nav" unit and I have to use a Nuvi 760 if I actually want to get there.

2Very weak for a "Flagship" navigation unit
By flightjunkie
This unit is not what I expected for a "Flagship" unit from Pioneer. If I would have been able to test a unit before purchasing, I would not have purchased it.1) The Navigation screens are so poorly designed. If you have the unit search for any point of interest, i.e. "Taco Bell", it will give you multiple results with the distance being the only thing differentiating them. You have no idea which street they are on, or in which direction they are from you. Completely useless. It would not be asking much for them to at least put an address on there. Ideally, a map display of results, similar to what you get with Google Maps is ideal. However, for an update, I would be happy with just showing addresses.2) The features of the radio are utterly pathetic. There is less functionality in this radio than the most basic car stereos. You can only have 6 channels in memory, and 3 FM "modes" (FM1, FM2, FM3), for a total of 18. Why so little channels? Is it a lack of technology, processing power, or laziness in design? There is no scan function. The channel info freezes when you switch away from the station, and stays there until you reselect the station. So, you may have a partial name of a song you listened to days ago, as a means to identify what one of your presets are.3) Voice features for music are not responsive. I don't even bother with this feature anymore. It rarely understands what you ask for, and usually ends up changing the audio source when I ask it to play an artist or album. The Voice dialing actually works really well, so I do not know what the disconnect is between great voice dialing and terrible voice music requests.4) Musicsphere is more trouble than it is worth. The program is just a convoluted way of making playlists. You can jump through hula hoops to make playlists through this program or you can just use Genius in Itunes or make them yourself. The program does not work with 64 bit versions of Windows OS's, so hopefully your computer is not too advanced for this.5) Outdated options. There is an option to dial Google 411 on the phone screen, and when you call it, Google informs you that the service is no longer available. They could have removed this on a firmware update but have not.6) AVIC feeds app has terrible ratings.Read the reviews on the Itunes store for more info. I have never had the pleasure of using it because it is not compatible with an older operating system I am running on my Iphone.BOTTOM LINE-------------------------For a "Flagship" aka "Top of the Line" Product from Pioneer, this navigation unit has many shortcomings. As of this review, there is not even a downloadable firmware update for the unit. There used to be one, but it is no longer there. Hopefully they are preparing a new firmware that addresses many of the shortcomings that this unit currently has. If they do, I will update this review.Until Pioneer makes changes to this unit and future units, save your money and wait for a company to really put an effort into their top-of-the-line products.

5Correction to M.Martins review
By HLS811
I also have this radio and think its great.. very easy to use and looks awesome.. Martins wrote in his review "and all the streets are pre-programmed, any updates come straight from Garmin via satellite, " - thats NOT true. Software updates need to be downloaded from Garmins website and burned to a CD and copied over. Map updates are usually done yearly and must be purchased (for $140) from Garmin (or another authorized re-seller) - they are NOT free and are NOT sent straight from a satellite. It doesn't change how good this radio is, but I just wanted to make sure no one was basing their purchase on an incorrect statement.

3good product, some flaws
By RPG
The main advantages of this unit over similar units are (i) nav data not DVD-based or hard-disk-based, everything is on flash memory; (ii) name-brand nav (Garmin) and name-brand bluetooth add-on (Parrot), unlike off-brand hardware/firmware on other competing units; (iii) no retractable screen so fewer moving parts to fail.Basically this is a very good and useful unit. The nav is well-designed and works well. I do have some complaints:(a) Even though everything is in flash memory, startup is slow. You will be halfway down the block before the nav is ready, and two blocks away before the bluetooth unit has paired with your phone. I have been told that competing units are even slower, so maybe this is an improvement, but technology still has a ways to go. Certainly no reason for pairing to take this long, my old radio paired almost instantly.(b) Awful interface (except the Garmin part, which is fine):--The front panel buttons are completely non-intuitive; try figuring out how to turn the whole thing off and on, or how to turn off the radio playing in the background when using the nav. You can get used to it, but it's inelegant to say the least, and if you lend your car to someone, they'll never figure it out.--The onscreen menus are a complete jumble, and the manual is incomprehensible. (I consider myself to be technically savvy; I installed the system myself.)--The mp3 menu is awful, for example you can see tracks sorted by album or artist, but you just have to know how to do it because it is far from obvious. You need to push a button mysteriously marked PLIST. You have to do it again each time you start the car.--The Bluetooth interface is poorly designed, for example you can choose a number by voice commands, but you can't actually voice dial...you have to look at the screen and touch the 'dial' button to complete the dialing process.(c) If disconnected from the battery, all the settings are lost, and this can cause more problems than just loss of radio presets. I realize that after installation the unit shouldn't normally lose power, but if you take it in for service and they disconnect and reconnect the battery, the backup camera (add-on) stops working!I thought they cut the cable somehow, but actually the default setting of the Kenwood DNX5120 is to ignore the backup voltage signal. You have to go in and change the setting back. (There is a way to save the settings in nonvolatile memory and restore them, but this has to be done manually every time...why not save all settings in flash memory automatically?)

5Awesome Stereo
By RobDog
Kenwood DNX5120I June 5, 2008, I purchased and had Platinum Audio in Corona, California install my DNX5120. I have had Sony, Alpine, and Kenwood stereos prior and have experimented with iPod connections to these stereos. The stereo's killed two of my iPods. The DNX5120 broke all the rules and really exceeded my expectations as far as the iPod interface. The integration is clean, easy to understand, and faster to use than the iPod itself. Here is an example. I have countless artists on my iPod. Using the scroll wheel it take time to scroll through the artist until letters come up and to be honest with you, it takes me a least two tries to land on the right letter. Using the DNX5120, I can scroll down by multiple artist and even click on slide bar to go half the way down my list or all the way down. All this at the speed of just pressing button and not waiting for the iPod or the stereo to catch up.The navigation is dummy proof. I have used the BMW, Toyota, Magellan, Tom Tom, and Honda navigation and the DNX5120 blows them out of the water. It does not get any easier than this. I have read that it takes a long time to start up. I don't see that problem. Once I start my vehicle, the Kenwood screen appears for about 5 seconds and I am off to the races. After all, it is not good for the vehicle if you start and immediately drive.I don't have any complaints about the stereo. Here are some things I really like;* Knob for volume. It feel sturdy and I like touching the screen less than I have too* Clean font, easy to read* Quick/easy/instant access from user interface to navigation and back* Easy to understand hierarchy of menu* Garmin Nav. is easy to use and easy to upgrade* No need for second DVD box for nav.* Excellent GPS signal quality* Ability to watch iPod movies on screen* USB connection...I like putting my on photo as a backgroundThe bottom line is the shop did an outstanding job the installation and the DNX5120 works better than what I had expected. When you put this stereo in perspective, it is combining a tuner, a DVD player, an audio iPod, a video ipod, XM, and CD/MP3 player together into one unit with none to little glitches. And if you are an Apple fan like myself, this works perfectly with the iPod.That is my two cents and five out of five stars......

3Good sound and power
By Ryan Kraus
The sound quality and power are better than stock. Has alot of features but some are a bit quirky. Pandora does not always work as advertised and many of the pioneer aps available are not compatible with this head unit. Google maps works well with this and with soften music levels to tell directions through the speakers .
