    4A great headunit
    By N. Graeve
I would rate this unit an 8.8/10. I own a 2009 Honda Accord Ex-L w/o Nav because Honda charges a ridiculously high price for their navigation package and I knew I could do better for cheaper with aftermarket. This unit does an ok job with its navigation, but not as good as other units. The alpine has about 6 million points of interest compared to 12 million of other units so if you are searching for a location without its address, it could pose potential problems. As far as map updates, I doubt it. I have heard from Alpine owners of past and they still haven't released a map update for previous models. A feature I would have liked to seen is the ability to send an address to your headunit from googlemaps which would have negated the need for map updates in my opinion. The turn by turn navigation is nice, the voice is not annoying and it has an adjustable setting that controls how loud the voice comes in over your music. Another feature I like is being able to see your next turn even if you are on the audio screen.Where this unit shines, in my opinion, is its ipod integration.**Disclaimer: Be forewarned if you have an ipod touch you will have issues with it because it is not completely compatible with the ipod touches. There will be occasional disconnects and the only solution is to unplug and then plug back in your ipod, even on the latest firmware, 3.1 as of this message. I have confirmed this with Alpine support (which is sub par at best). This would have been a deal breaker for me, but luckily I have a classic also that works very well with it even though there are some minor quirks though (not a dealbreaker in my book), but that could be because of the ipod, it is rather old and has been run over.**The way you access your ipod is pretty much mimicked through the Alpine. You have access to everything you would normally have when using your ipod (music, movies, podcasts, playlists...). The sound quality using the ipod to the headunit is nice!!! I am no audiophile but music sounds great from this headunit with the settings I currently have. I have heard from others that the IMPRINT module makes it sound even better if you don't know how to properly configure your settings by yourself (which I know I don't). Album artwork shows up nicely in the corner if you have artwork for the song or if you prefer, your next turn if using navigation. One thing I would have liked to have seen with the ipod integration is a search function so you don't have to scroll through all of your music. I have 4,000+ songs and even though you can scroll by alphabet, it would make things a lot faster in some cases if I could just use a search function that narrowed down all the available listings every time you clicked another letter to the song/artist/album name like you would do with your ipod. Speaking of the alphabet search function, it can be a little hairy at times. You would think that since one of the selling points of this head unit is its ipod integration, it would sort songs like iTunes does seeing as how iTunes is the only way to put songs on your ipod. For example, lets say I have the following list of songs:Almost EasyAmerican Idiot...And Justice for AllArterial BlackBaba O'RileyIf I am currently on a screen that shows these 5 songs and I hit the Alphabet > button you would think it would put the 'B' listings at the top, but it doesnt. It sees the ... and puts that at the top of the screen since it is different from 'A'. So now we have ...And Justice for All at the top of the screen and if I were to hit the Alphabet > button again, Arterial Black would show at the top because 'A' is different from .... iTunes ignores these just like it does the word 'The' in song titles when sorting by alphabet but this headunit does not. Minor quirk, I know.Video looks great on the 7 inch screen and the sound quality is great as well when using a DVD. If you use a converter to change a video to ipod format (instead of DVD format) from say .flv (YouTube's format) or .avi there is some sound/video quality loss but it is still convenient to be able to store all of your movies on your ipod and have them accessible at any time.I also bought an Alpine backup camera to go along with the headunit and it is a dream to have. I am very surprised it came with toggable cones to help you measure distance. Along the same lines, this headunit is an awesome all in one system. There are connections for another AUX input so if you wanted to put in say a front camera or PS2, this system is accomodating. Be prepared to pony out the money for extras though (backup camera, Imprint, HD radio, SIRIUS, Bluetooth). These are all seperate modules that you must pay for. I was a little disheartened to see you had to pay out extra for Imprint and Bluetooth. Maybe not so much the Imprint, but definately the Bluetooth I felt should have been included. The touchscreen user interface is responsive and user friendly, not to mention eye candy. Be prepared to hear people say "I want that" for any passengers you might have. Menus are easy to navigate and provide adequate system options. I cannot speak on audio options such as HPF or LPF, for people with aftermarket audio systems, as I don't have one and I have never dealt with options like that before. All in all, this unit is a definate + in my book. I am very happy with my purchase and am glad I didn't buy a different head unit, I would just like to see some map updates and I will be a very happy man.Summary:+++Definate headturner++Audio Sound Quality+Touchscreen interface+Ipod Integration...-Assuming you don't have a iTouch+Built to be an all in one device...-If you shell out extra money for the modules+- Navigation package has its moments. Map updates hold this unit back from being competitive with other units.--Alpine Support

1This Isn't Your Fathers Alpine Anymore!
    By Hwy505
For any reviewer to state that this is a "Solid" system is being disingenuous to the potential buyers who look at reviews for some guidance.Let's start with the aesthetics - it's quite a nice looking head unit, the tilt screen is a plus, and the disc insert as well as memory card location is quite good. The separate junction box always you to place a USB inside your glove compartment. There's your one star!Paying over $1000 for a system, solely for a name that you expect to be quality, is not what you get with this unit. Every other item, which is usually pre-installed with most units is a separate purchase. I purchased the BT connector - now everything paired fine, I hear the other party clearly, and no one can hear me. I contacted Alpine numerous times via email, without ever getting a reply. I finally got through to them and explained my problem; they stated "That's strange." I was told that they felt it was the microphone - so they sent me a new mic. Still, same problem, they then stated it must be the BT unit - they said they would send me a new one. A month after not receiving it I called - they said "Oh yeah, we'll send one out." They did, and it still doesn't work. So it's obviously the head unit. I gave up on that and took it as a loss. The navigation system is horrendous - specific locations don't exist. For instance: I place "Radio Shack" in the system, knowing there's a half-dozen around here - the closest one I get is 300 miles away. This has happened more times than I care to count.Updates? HA - there aren't any!The touch screen is crazy - you need uber-pressure, and if you are not directly in the middle of the button, forget it. The response time after hitting an area you want is about 2 seconds - that's a lifetime in computer lingo. The one good thing I got - was a PAC-TR7 (An aftermarket item) - this way my son is able to watch his shows on the head unit without the e-brake on.Bottom-line, coming from someone that has purchased a slew of different head units over the last 30-years, stay away from this - and Alpine USA is no longer your fathers Alpine! Do yourself a favor - look at a different manufacturer, and look hard - but don't put yourself an amazing disappointment by purchasing this item, and/or dealing with Alpine USA - it's just not worth frustration when you are purchasing something for entertainment.

1If you want navigation go elsewhere
    By Sawbonze
I have to admit that I'm pretty happy with the sound after a lot of tweaking. As for the Imprint, it quit working shortly after purchase and I was not impressed enough with it to justify paying to have it taken out and replaced. Watch out for all of the needed add-ons. They get pricey and you could potentially run out of room in your dash. I have a 2010 F250 and the installer had to use the glovebox for extra room. The lack of remote bothered me a bit but you can easily purchase one on Ebay for around 20 bucks. The bad...and I mean very bad...about this unit is the Navigation. If you're looking for somewhere you had best have the address. It can't even find a Hilton in Orlando! It'll certainly get you to the vicinity of many locations (if you have the address) but sometimes even with the address you'll wind up taking the long way around or getting close and then acting lost its own self. I would not recommend this unit to anyone without a decent sense of direction. A map update availability is critical to any GPS and there are no updates. I believe the map Alpine uses is ancient.I've had the unit for 6 months now and would very much prefer a different unit. Unfortunately, I cannot afford to replace the thousand plus dollars I've spent on this unit with another expensive one. The navigation portion of the unit has quit working and system reset will not return it to function. Alpine support is lousy.I do keep the system both for financial reasons as well as being happy with sound quality. That being said, though, I wish I had purchased a different unit.

    5Amazing! Love it!
    By Drew Peacock
I have read some pretty harsh reviews about this stereo. The first thing I looked at before buying was the date of the reviews; they were all a couple years old. Since then Tom Tom has updated their software and I have experienced no problems with any aspect of the stereo, gps, bluetooth, screen sensitivity or anything for that matter. Everything works great. I recently moved to Maryland so the navigation and hands-free(hands-free is the law here) were a must. The bluetooth connects perfectly, the phone calls are crystal clear(I imagine this may depend on you phone also) and the blutooth audio is flawless. The GPS only takes a few seconds to find my location and has not failed me yet (two months). The rear view camera is perfect, although, I have a truck and the leads could have been just a little longer, but they worked and everything looks great. I would buy this stereo again in a heartbeat. Highly recommend.

    4Great upgrade to stock
    By Joshua P. Crow
I have had this stereo for a couple of months and feel that I know it enough to review properly.First, before I bought the head unit, I read lots of reviews and those reviews made me worry that the GPS might be poor and that the user interface was going to be unmanageable.1) The GPS works great. I updated my TomTom module before installing the HU so I have had no problems.2) Do not listen to people who are over-the-top against this user interface. I find it to be snappy and responsive and there is no problem with the menu structure. Could it be improved upon? Yes, I think that it could. Is it a complete pain in the ass to use? NO. It is actually very simple. While you often have to return to the "TOP" menu to navigate to various other screens, I find it to be a design philosophy common to Sony products to have a "Home" screen that is your portal to the rest of the device. You see this in the PS3, Sony DVD players and PSPs, etc. or any Sony product with XMB.If you are interested in using the USB input to play music off of a USB Flash Drive, you should know that 16gb of music takes 1 - 2 minutes to load. It can feel like longer, and the first time you plug it in it might take longer. This is a long load time and with that amount of music, SenseMe becomes basically useless because it takes forever to load and when it does it has problems choosing more than 20 or 30 songs. SenseMe was a huge waste of time for this reason, and this is why I took a star off for my overall rating. The sound is great.Another reason I took a star off is that you cannot have SiriusXM, only Sirius, and the sound quality of the Sat radio is very poor, although I think this is common to all Sirius receivers (which you have to buy seperately.) You cannot have both a Sat Radio and an HD radio installed at the same time, you must choose between the two and decide which you would rather have.Overall, this is a great unit. I am very happy with its functionality. It looks great and sounds great and does nearly everything I could want.

    5Sony Head unit with TomTom
    By Vincent O. Hara
This unit is everything it promised to be and more. The combination of high quality hardware, easy installation and simple user interface makes living with this unit a treat.Audio quality is second to non. The screen is excellent with the best resistance to fingerprints and smears of any touch screen I've ever seen.TomTom unit upgradable - but takes hours for the 2Gb download and separate write.Maps are very accurate.Very recommended

    5Good Product Excellent Price
    By M. Gary
After about 4 months of researching and reading reviews on a number of different stereos, the Amazon price drop is what finally sold me. This stereo sales for as much as $1300 on other sites. I had this stereo installed in my Buick Rainier with a pre existing Bose system.Pros: Built in Amplifier that works well with existing premium sound systems. I did have to purchase a Bose interface. Navigation auto switches from 2D to 3D while on long road trips (drove from Va. Beach to New Hampshire)Switches automatically to 3D on long routes to show exits and POIs. Ipod interface is very nice. All you have to do is use your ipod cable and plug it into the usb line (which runs to my glove compartment) and you have instant IPOD touch screen interface. Seemless Touchscreen navigation. Takes about 5 minutes to get used to how to change from audio to nav screens, but once you get used to it, it takes no thought at all. Set and forget destination (what i call it anyway) You can set your destination, then return to the audio screen without worry of losing direction. While listening to music, when it comes time to get off the interstate or, merge into traffic etc. The Nav screen will automatically show with directions and voice instructions. Afterwards it will return to your audio screen. Can be hooked right into your Onstar gps antenna with very quick turn by turn directions and takes about 30 secs to calculate the best route. You can also setup interstate or toll bypass points. Very good screen and sound while playing DVD's. Finding Nemo almost looked like watching a HDTV.Cons: POIs can be off. Says there's a gas station where there's not. (this is do to maps, not the system. Just wanted to point that out) No way to change the background for the audio screen. Not really a big gripe. Just would like to put graphics in the background instead of a grey screen. Remote does not work out of the box. (Most likely something i have done or not done) I can hear the system beeping when I push buttons on the remote, but nothing happens (NOTE: I'm a man and have not read in entirety the instruction manual) When tilting the screen, you have to tilt thru all the positions to get it to return back flush. I would have liked to be able to hit one button for this, or have the system automatically return to neutral, as I don't like to leave my vehicle with the screen tilted. Announcement volume level and key in ignition/seat belt indicator.Talk about these in seperate but are big issues depending on user. AVL- Is extremely loud at times, or soft. If you are listening to music you "WILL" have to adjust the announcements volume to be able to hear, as the system does not pause or mute music, just dampens it. The other problem with this is, if you are in a situation where you have the music turned down, now she screams at you "YOU ARE OVER THE SPEED LIMIT" or "APPROACHING EXIT IN ....." The safety mode (speed limit warning etc) can be turned off. I ended up turning it off as the speed limits on the maps are not always the posted speed limit. Seat belt/Key ignition indicator- I had my system professionally installed, and the shop kept the car extra time trying to figure out why the car beeped (extremely loudly) when started. After about 3 days I figured this out. The stereo amplifies the warning ding sound for the seat belt and key ignition. Could not figure out how to turn this off, but did find out that if I put my seatbelt on before turning the ignition theres no ding.Bottom line, For a sleek looking navigation system that works with lil flaw in a $600 price range from Amazon. The Clarion NX509 is in a class with higher end Panasonic 2-Din Nav kits.

The JVC KW-AVX748 DVD Receiver with Bluetooth has been more that just a quality buy. For the price of the DVD removal face player it has worked without any complaints. Attractive look, quality components, all features operate as advertised and this customer is completely satisfied.
