5This Systems does it all
By SunGuru
I purchased this a few months ago and installed it myself. It was very easy to install using the Cructhfield supplied cable that allows direct connection to the factory wiring harness. This system is top notch and will do everything you could ask for. First off it has the standard radio channels like AM and FM, but does anyone even listen to them anymore? So add the JVC SiriusConnect and you have satellite radio at its best. But still if thats not enough radio for you ,this thing has HD-Radio built in, so you can even listen to all your local favorite HD stations. But if that isn't enough for your Radio listening pleasure how about streaming iHeartRadio or Pandora to this machine via bluetooth from your phone. Thats right you can stream iTunes, iHeartRadio, Pandora or even DSAudio from your Synology disk station at home. So how about the navigation feature? I've taken a few long hauls with this and I have to say that one of the neat features is once you plug in your destination a few states away, no matter how many times you stop or go looking for gas or food this thing will always bring you back to the route it planned for you, even after you turn the vehicle off, start it up and it picks up where you left off, Nice touch! Ohh and because this device has Total Traffic HD network built in you can set this navigation system to automatically alert and re-route you around congestion and accidents on the route. The maps and navigation system are the same as the leading GPS manufacturer uses and you pretty much won't notice a difference if you were using one of those devices. I was on a wild goose chase looking for a historic landmark a few weeks ago but all i had was the gps coordinates, no problem, input them into the nav system and it will take you to the spot! I found every landmark using the coordinates I got off the wikipedia site! How about a little about the other features, you can hook up your iPod, or iPhone via usb and listen to your whole library. Or you can load an SD card and play your library from there. Or pop a DVD in and watch a movie while your waiting for your significant other at the store. There are so many other things it can do, connect a backup camera and eliminate that blind spot behind you. I love the detachable front panel, and the nice padded case to put it in when you want to wander off with it in your pack and not leave it for thieves. If you have an iPad you can connect that to this system too through the video input. It also has a built in Equalizer with many presets or you can create your own presets too. And what about the Total Traffic HD network? Since JVC released the new firmware the traffic information is now updated via the iHeart Radio Network. This is awesome, so now even when your in an area with sparse or no Traffic Network Coverage you can get all the information down to your system in just minutes. To say this system rocks is an understatement! Buy it you won't be sorry!I forgot to mention that it works very well as a bluetooth communications device, I synced my iPhone to it and can make and receive calls through the unit into the audio system. You can dial from on-screen or from your device.

2Feature rich but serious deficiency in Navi software
By Michael A. Israel
Update:After just a few months of use, I replaced this with a Kenwood DNX9990HD and could not be happier. The Kenwood offers all the features of the JVC but with a Navigation solution that is actually usable. I no longer need to drive around with a portable GPS on the windshield as I did with the JVC.============================Having previously owned a KNX-7000 I was really excited to get hold of the new JVC Navi. JVC tends to offer a lot of features for the dollar. Most of it works really well and other reviewers have covered the many good points with which I will concur.Unfortunately, once up and running, I discovered a software deficiency that I deem as so fundamental that it took the KW from a 5 star to a 2 star rating. Stated simply, the JVC does not allow you to view your routes as text. This is a flaw in all of the 2011-2012 JVC models.Just about any GPS on the planet will allow you to view a listing of the proposed route. This is critical as any GPS will at times propose a route that makes no sense. Equally important, you often want to see that after exiting route XYZ, you will be making a left turn on Maple Street. The JVC does offer have what they call "route simulation" but this is a slow process whereby it runs through the route in fast forward, like watching a video animation with voice prompts and all. Again, no way to simply look and see if the route makes sense or what lies ahead. Preview mode is not at all practical while you are under way. Recently, I was using the JVC along with my portable garmin. The JVC was trying to put me on a copletely different highway but there was no quick and easy way to answer the question, "where is it trying to take me". All you get to see about the proposed route is the next turn. Had I not known better, or not had the Garmin with me, it would have taken me on a crazy route through the city with heavy traffic. If the capabilities of teh Navi are not important to you then either go ahead and buy this for its other features or save a ton of money and buy the equivalent non-navi version. If and when they do fix this, it will definitely be a 4-5 star unit. The earlier JVC Navis did not have this deficiency. I thought I must have overlooked something and contacted JVC support. Here was their reply:"I understand you would like to view your routes from the KW-. I do apologize but he unit only has the simulation option. It does not have a text box with the turn by turn directions. I did double check on our 2012 units and the same applies to those models as well. "Hopefully JVC addresses this with a future software update. Unfortunately, my experience with JVC has been that software and map updates are very infrequent. For the time being, I would highly recommend spending an extra $100 for the Kenwood. I will likely be selling my new JVC on that big auction site.Update:I sent JVC another note asking them to consider putting this feature from the older units into a software update. Kenwood / Garmin often provide updates that enhance the functionality of even their oldest Navi units. JVC replied as follows indicating that they will not provide enhancements to existing products, only bug fixes."We thank you for your feedback. We will take your input into consideration for future products that we will have. Please understand that we only make updates to enhance the existing features of our product and not to add a new one."For now it appears that JVC employees and resellers would rather vote down this review instead of addressing the problem. So be it, I stick by my rating.

3I've had this deck for almost a year...
By P. Morgenroth
And there are some features I really like, and a few glaring quirks that frustrate me.The system itself seems fairly quick and responsive. Boot up time is only a couple of seconds and radio playback starts the second it comes on. The main menu system is pretty well laid out and not too cluttered or confusing. The customization menus are fairly user friendly and you can get to most of the important stuff without digging through screens and screens of never ending sub-menus.The sound is superb with my upgraded speakers. HD radio is awesome, it sounds great and adds some great music choices. The Bluetooth works very well for phone calls and music streaming. The added feature of an SD card is really nice. I have a 32gb SD card in it with 1000s of my favorite songs on it sorted into genre folders and I can shuffle each folder or all of them. It has all kinds of additional input and outputs for amps, cameras (the backup cam works great) and external screens. The DVD feature works pretty good (with p.brake bypass). I really like the customizable features for sound, Nav, CD/DVD, and display. There is separate volume setting for ech media input type. Something I wish I had in my truck. I can be rocking out and get a phone call. The call usually is more quiet than the music, so I turn up the volume. Then, when i switch back to radio when the call ends, Im blown out of my seat with really loud music. Thats not a problem with this deck with independent volume settings. Some other have complained of navigational errors, but so far in my experience, I have never been led astray. Sometimes it has giving me some interesting route suggestions, but nothing too radical. All of these things I have listed I really like and would make a perfect deck if it wasn't for:NO VOICE activated features!?That is a feature even my old Avic D3 ( a sweet deck in its time) had. There is sort of a work around; I have a CD slot cell phone holder (really cool and Amazon sells em for $20.) And just tap the voice dial button on the phone itself. There is no way to give voice commands for music, like "Play Led Zeppelin". Again, if i was playing music on my phone I could use the phones voice command, but that is no good for media on the actual HU.There is no voice command for Nav. No way to ask it to find the closest gas station or coffee shop. Of course I could use the phone and ask google maps to find these things for me, but that uses your mobile data AND defeates the purpose of the deck Nav all together.Secondly, the poi and destination input are a bit clumsy. You are prompted for street name, and city FIRST, then house number. I guess that isn't a big deal, but it seems backwards to me, and threw me off until I got used to it. The traffic alert feature would be cool if it was a bit more like Google maps/DOT type with color codes to show traffic flow and different icons to show the type of "traffic event" such as construction, wreck, etc. It simply shows a "!" in a yellow square that you have to tap (and you have to be really zoomed in on it for it to "aim" properly at the icon) it to tell you what the issue is. It would also be nice if it gave a verbal warning about upcoming traffic problems (Warning: accident ahead).I am also concerned about map updates. I have been unable to find any yet.So, it almost feels like I should just save several hundred bucks, use my smart phone on a mount. Hook it up to a simple car deck and use the smart phone to do all the music, phone, and navigating. It would certainly provide better usability, voice integration, up to date maps, and better traffic information...The things I like about this deck, I love! But the deficiencies it has are really a bummer and make it hard to recommend shelling out 700. (it was 800 when I bought it). Or, maybe I am expecting too much?
